Literacy Project

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Ms. Finnegan and Ms. Dalton’s classes are at it again!
The students in High School have been working on audio versions of spring and summer themed books for the Early Childhood and Elementary programs. The students work very hard to scan the books, edit them, create powerpoint presentations and record audio over the presentations so that the young students can read along! It is a wonderful way to encourage literacy and technology skills for everyone involved! The books are accessible to all classroom teachers and are a great way for kids to interact with books from the library! Switches can be used to turn the pages of the presentation, so all students have access!

At the end of the projects term the High School students head over the Early Childhood classes and read to them! Such a wonderful way to encourage the love of reading. Thanks to all the staff and students who make these projects come to life! Great job!

Early Intervention Outreach in the Community

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

The Early Intervention Outreach Program had a wonderful Field Trip to Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Zoo. The Early Intervention Outreach has special outings throughout the year to provide children the opportunity to experience a new environment, and to explore hands-on sensory activities. Also, it is an opportunity for families to get out into a community setting and to meet and network with other parents.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Ms. Dalton and Ms. Finnegan’s classes spent the morning performing for the Early Childhood Program! The students did their own version of “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” as told by the Wolf!

The part of the Wolf was played by Franklin, who had the children (and the adults) laughing loudly with his storytelling!

Franklin Plays the Wolf

The Pigs were played by Alex and Sara and there were six narrators who helped tell the story! The students in Early Childhood got to participate by holding up pigs and wolves on sticks and joining in when the actors said “He huffed and he snuffed”. There were smiles all around as the children listened to the story.

Congratulations to: David, Alex, Vanessa, Reina, Matt, Zack, Kiarra, Ebony, Franklin and Sara for a job very well done. A big thanks to Ms. Dalton and Ms. Finnegan, and all the early childhood staff and students!

Spa Days in the Early Childhood Program

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

The Early Childhood Program is hosting “Spa Day” for all of the students. As a belated Valentine’s activity the children all have the opportunity to get a manicure, pedicure and a bit of primping! Self care activities are important to the students, and so are opportunities to be a little bit pampered. The staff and the students had a great time at the “spa” and the festivities continue tomorrow as well.

Holiday Guide for Parents of Children Who Are Visually Impaired

Friday, December 11th, 2009

FamilyConnect™ has a number of resources for parents of children and teenagers who are blind or visually impaired. If you are looking for fun, accessible games and activities for the holiday season, we hope you will find the following links helpful.

Holiday Gift Giving Guide

Toy Guide—AFB has been collaborating with the Toy Industry Foundation for over a decade creating this guide, Let’s Play: A Guide to Toys for Children with Special Needs. All of the toys are tested by dozens of children with vision loss, and we choose the ones that seem to be most popular. The guide indicates whether the toy is considered especially good for children who are blind (B) and children who have low vision (LV).
