Reading Poetry

Today is National Poem in Your Pocket Day. Its a day that commemorates the sharing of poetry, and students in the High School Program did just that! The life skills classes got together for an amazing poetry reading. Everyone shared their name poem, either by reading it aloud, or using switches to share it with others. It was a really happy event filled with lots of smiles and great poetry.

Poets In the High School Program

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Ms. Adacusky’s English classes spend a great deal of time reading literature, writing poetry, improving literacy and having a great time while learning. For Earth Day, the students wrote poetry to pay respect to our great planet.

In the Earth’s Shoes

If I walked in the earth’s shoes,
I would want people to recycle, reduce, reuse.
Everyday, I wonder how the earth feels.
I think it says “is this really real?”
Why do people mistreat it? Lie to it and cheat it?
Is it because you hate it? If so, don’t violate it.

This is a disgrace;
Clean up the place.

Everything should be clean anyway. Would you want to live like that everyday?
Water should be brown or green, or blue.
Flowers that are new should continue to look new.
Reuse paper bags. Don’t let them drag as you walk along the ground.
This is why the earth frowns.

If something is green that is meant to be green, then keep it green by keeping the earth clean.
You should go green. You know what I mean. I’m tired of dirt. Let’s change this whole scene.
I am in the earth’s shoes, and this is how I feel.

The First Students Ever to Present at the Spring Vision Conference

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Yesterday marked the culmination of months of work for Donal Buie and Jeffery Boudwin, who presented at the AER Spring Vision Conference in Grantville, PA, on the Braille Plus Mobile Manager. Although the two High School students are experts on their devices, they had never presented to a large group of educators before. They practiced for many hours, wrote dialog, re-wrote dialog, and held together the rest of the activities and education happening daily in their lives.

They set off for Grantville, PA early with Ms. Marano, Mrs. Whartnaby and Ms. Dael Cohen. It was a gorgeous day, and everyone was excited! When asked if they were nervous, they both responded “a little” with smiles on their faces. Everyone whose ever presented knows how daunting it can be to stand up in a room full of people and engage, educate and entertain an audience. Imagine being a student who was going to present to educators and end users — quite an honor, as well as responsibility.

The guys did wonderfully! They were professional, knowledgeable, interesting and made the audience laugh too. The audience was attentive, interested and truly engaged with their presentation. Questions were asked, and the two responded with grace. It was apparent that they had prepared well and were enjoying themselves.

Jeff and Donal were a big hit at the conference and we are more than proud of them. They were the first two students to ever present at this yearly event. Staff and students alike are glowing today at Overbook at the remarkable job they did. Our school is so proud of your accomplishment!

What started as an idea blossomed into a life experience well-worth the effort. Way to go Jeff and Donal!
