A Training Program for Parents of Children Who Have a Visual Impairments and Who May Also Have Other Challenges

If a baby who has limited vision is not helped to understand what she is seeing, she may stop using her vision altogether. If parents with a baby who is totally blind are not reached immediately by people who can help them cope, they may feel utterly helpless and alone.

This is where Overbrook's Early Intervention Outreach Program comes in. EIO is a home-based program for the families of children ages birth to three years, who are blind or visually impaired and who may have additional disabilities. The focus of the program is to give support and education to families to help their child.

The home visits are a time when the staff and the families work together to create a fun and exciting world, where their child can grow and learn in their everyday routines. The program serves families in Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. The staff also supports families by going with them on doctor's appointments, organizing family support groups, informational workshops, and planning activities in the community.  Teachers of the Visually Impaired utilize, the PA State Approved, Ounce Scale as a basis for their assessments and instruction.  The Ounce Scale is a performance assessment developed for infants and toddlers, which includes family members in the assessment process.

Early Intervention Outreach hosts an annual, three-day Summer Workshop for families throughout Pennsylvania, the United States and the world. For more information, please contact Durrae Delp-Ducret at (215) 877-0313 x369 or email her at: Durrae Delp-Ducret

What is the Summer Workshop?
The Summer Workshop is for parents and for their children who have visual impairments, who are between the ages of birth and three years old. The workshop sessions teach parents how to work with their children during the critical first years so that they develop to the fullest of their potential.

The Summer Workshop Sessions

  • Daily parent training seminars
  • Hands-on parent-child sessions with staff guidance
  • Individual parent conferences with staff specialists
  • Informal parent meetings

Topics include, but are not limited to, orientation and mobility, communication, parent support and advocacy. Parent or care givers and their child are encouraged to stay at Overbrook for the two evenings of the Summer Workshop.

There is no cost to the family to attend EIO Summer Workshop.
