How Can Overbrook School for the Blind Help You?

We realize navigating the world of education can be daunting. We understand that finding the right educational fit for your student is one of the most important decisions you will make in their lifetime. This is not always an easy task for students who may have visual impairment or additional challenges. We want you to know, that we are here to help. If you are a parent with a child who is newly diagnosed, reach out. If you are a teacher who isn't sure what you should do to help a student in your class, reach out. If you think your child may be having difficulty in their school or daycare due to vision issues, please reach out. We have been serving our community, both local and global, for 187 years. When you need us we will be there for you.

Our Students Welcome You

Who better to welcome you to our school, then the students themselves? Take a few minutes to learn why our students LOVE showing up for school every day, then call and schedule a tour to find out if we might be the right fit for your child or student.

When Rhonda was asked how she would describe her role at Overbrook, she chose:

Support, Connection, and Fun!

Much like the title suggests, a Parent Liaison is the designated individual whose primary function is to bridge the gap between home and school by helping parents get the information and support they need to ensure their child's academic and social success. OSB Parent Liaison Rhonda Davis works with teachers, staff, parents, families, community stakeholders, and external service providers to increase student success inside and outside of OSB. Please feel free to contact Rhonda Davis with any questions you may have. Rhonda develops our Parent Newsletter, organizes family events, and helps parents navigate the world of special education with a focus on taking care of the entire family during the process.  Rhonda hosts parent workshops monthly at the Woodbine House, and she loves to be of assistance in any way that she can to provide you with new and incredible opportunities.

Parent Workshops are frequently scheduled to bring OSB parents together to talk about topics related to raising children with disabilities. Parenting a child with disabilities is an isolating experience, so it is important to make an effort to get out and talk to other parents. Parents meet in a relaxing space, have lunch together, talk, share, and learn from each other.

Many of the workshops are led by a partnership with Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities and Elwyn. Past workshops topics have included Visual Impairments and Social Skills, Vision and Transitions, Creating a Vision for your Child, and Understanding Evaluations.

Helpful Tips for Parents

Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Christine Wozniak, shares some great tips on how to better understand vision exams and visual acuity that you can read here.

Pre-School Transition Considerations

Preschool to School-Age Transition: Considerations for Children Who Are Blind/Visually Impaired

As your child transitions from Early Intervention/Preschool services to school-age services, your school district will complete an evaluation of your child to determine your child’s educational needs. As your child and you go through this process, it is important for you to discuss your child’s needs with the educational team. This document provides a list of questions and considerations related to the unique needs of children who are blind/visually impaired, deafblind or blind/visually impaired with additional disabilities. This tool is designed to guide your discussions to ensure that the school district considers all of your child’s educational needs including the Expanded Core Curriculum of skills that are essential for all students with visual impairments.

While this tool was developed to assist both families and school districts to develop educational programs for children transitioning from Early Intervention to School Age services, the questions and considerations are relevant for students of any age.

If you have any questions related to your child transitioning to a school-age program, please contact Lynne Williams at Lynne@obs.org
