Itinerant Services
When a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment, TVI/Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, or COMS travel to your school to assist your student
Overbrook School for the Blind employs 14 Teachers of the Visually Impaired who work in the community with students from Birth through 21 years of age. They travel to homes, daycare, Public Schools, Private Schools, and Charter Schools. TVI Itinerant Teacher will work directly with the child and assist the classroom teacher in modifying the learning environment or instructional methods that would best meet the child’s needs. The Itinerant Teacher provides instruction and activities that work toward goal achievement, based on the student's IEP. At our school, Itinerant teachers have an entire network of support and education at their back, they are not traveling "solo" to come to your school. Our teachers have a network of TVIs at their back to work with to find answers. Our TVIs in the community have access to technology, braille production, and an entire school filled with adapted materials and experts in the field of visual impairment. Our Teachers of the Visually Impaired are advised by administrators who are also TVIs, so we can ensure best practice and that the time with our students in their schools is as productive and useful as it can be.
Overbrook School for the Blind offers itinerant services (Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment, TVI/Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS travel to your school) for K-12 students at charter schools, private schools, and school districts in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. Overbrook School for the Blind also offers professional outreach workshops for instructional staff, expert assessments in areas like Orientation and Mobility, Functional Vision, and Learning Media Assessments, and resource support for the Philadelphia Community. Our teachers are highly qualified and receive on-going professional development in all areas of visual impairment as well as all state required training.
Itinerant services are appropriate for general education students who can benefit from participation in regular class activities, who will use adapted materials and special equipment and techniques and can function as members of general education.
