Occupational Therapy Contact, Therapy Services: Melissa Brown

oc·cu·pa·tion·al ther·a·py
noun
a form of therapy that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required in daily life.

The Occupational Therapist (OT) is responsible for evaluating and addressing a student’s overall functional performance in all school environments.  OT offers individualized evaluation and intervention plans in the following areas: sensory processing, activities of daily living, gross and fine motor skills, leisure/recreation, vocational skills, personal management including the organization of self and materials in school, home, and work environments.

Occupational Therapists at OSB integrate into the students programming throughout the day to ensure the student has full access to their educational environment. A typical OT session may include sensory and alerting activities, positioning of student or materials and set up of a variety of assistive technology to increase access that may include switches, mounts or environmental control.

CREATE A CVI SHAPE SORTER PDF

Mr. Frank and Ms. Melissa Collaborate to Create a CVI Adapted Shape Sorter!

With the help of Mr. Frank L., one of our incredible maintenance staff here at Overbrook School for the Blind,  Melissa Brown, OTR/L was able to bring an adaptation she was dreaming up to life. Together they were able to create this adapted shape sorter for our students with CVI. Ms. Melissa had the vision of something more stationary than was readily available and that did not have to be manipulated along with the shapes, but also decreased the visual working distance, while drawing the visual attention to the openings. That's A LOT of things!

Melissa sketched out her ideas and Frank brought it to life! Here you will find a PDF with materials and instructions to create it for your students! Of course, you may need your own everyday hero, like Frank, to build it!
