Speech Therapy
Our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a crucial role in supporting communication, language, and feeding/swallowing development. The SLP collaborates as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure that each student can access learning, social interaction, and daily routines through individualized communication supports.
SLPs conduct comprehensive speech, language, and communication evaluations that are adapted to meet each student’s unique needs. They help develop and implement individualized communication systems to support language development and interaction, which may include augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), spoken language, tactile communication, object or picture symbols, and/or sign language.
In addition to communication support, the SLP plays an essential role in addressing feeding and swallowing needs. They work closely with families, Health Services, Registered Dietician and Food Services to ensure that students are following the appropriate texture modifications and consistency levels as outlined by the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI). The SLP provides training, consultation, and ongoing monitoring to maintain student safety and promote positive mealtime experiences.
The SLP also collaborates closely with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), Physical Therapists (PTs), Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS), Audiologists, classroom staff, and parents to integrate communication and feeding strategies across environments. The SLP’s work empowers students to connect with others, express their needs and preferences, and participate meaningfully in school and community life
