Physical Therapy Contact: Darreth Zeccardi

The Physical Therapist may assess and intervene in regard to gross motor, sensory-motor, developmental, ambulatory, and postural needs as they relate to functional participation in the school environment. PT may help in any one or more of the following areas: sensory processing techniques, training to improve muscle strength, balance, coordination, endurance, gait training to improve skill and safety on stairs and various surfaces, postural integrity and control, wheelchair mobility, and power mobility.

At Overbrook, the Physical therapist attempts to integrate sessions into the natural school environment and routines of the classroom.  Through this model the therapist is able to collaborate with the classroom staff and team to maximize the student’s participation. Equipment needs and positioning are addressed in a timely manner for both school and home.  Classroom programs can be discussed and modified as needed.

Because therapists are on campus daily, the availability to consult with staff as well as parents increases, thus strengthening the student program.  This availability allows for physical therapists to work closely with Orientation and Mobility Instructors, the teacher and other therapeutic disciplines to provide accommodations and adaptations to build student independence.  It is a real team approach; different from many other therapeutic environments.

As a student ages, the physical therapist is essential in assisting with the transition from school to the community in terms of equipment needs and encouraging student advocacy.  The physical therapist also plays a role by introducing the student to lifetime fitness and wellness activities such as classroom yoga, motor groups or walking programs.
